Jewish law is based on the Bible, Talmud and Rabbinic Jurisprudence. The first two make up the "Constitution" of a Jewish national legislature, and the wealth of responsa literature provide interpretation of that constitution. This body of reported judicial opinions have become precedent, i.e. the basis for future decisions. When operating without a Jewish national legislature (Sanhedrin), law is derived from judicial decisions by application of precedent and so is also known as precedential law. Because it is law that is not enacted by a legislature, it is also a type of non-statutory law.

The Global Jewish Database (the Responsa Project)[1] is probably the closest we currently come to providing a definitive list of the most significant documents and attempts to provide the most reliable version of those documents. It contains the world's largest electronic collection of Jewish texts in Hebrew ever recorded, which embody thousands of years of Jewish learning. The database includes numerous works from the Responsa Literature - rabbinic case-law rulings which represent the historical-sociological milieu of real-life situations. In addition, the database includes the Bible, the Talmud and their principal commentaries; works about Jewish law and customs; major the codes of Jewish law, such as Maimonides' Mishneh Torah and the Shulchan Aruch with its principal commentaries; midrashim, Zohar, and the Talmudic Encyclopedia.

The following is a list of frequently cited sources in Rabbinic Jurisprudence, arranged in approximate chronological order:
