V.

The brotherhood of peoples.

Another important consequence of this design stems from a family of nations whose God is the common father and of which Israel is the firstborn "is that all people are brothers. If this idea has triumphed in Judaism, we must recognize that it is in spite of a thousand hostile influences, which proves the power of the doctrine that came to settle despite many obstacles.

We see that Moses sent messengers to Edom responsible for saying, "Thus saith thy brother Israel [1]". And besides, he did to the Hebrews this recommendation: "N'abhorre point the Edomite for he is your brother [2]". It may be objected that there is a remembrance of the blood ties that bound Jacob Esau Edom which is descended. But Ezekiel called Sodom's sister Israel. Is it simply because having both sinned, they deserve to be together in the same condemnation? What does one say then Amos who appoints all the heathen brothers and criticizes those committing injustices against others to forget the fraternal bond that unites them? There is even a psalm, filled with complaints of Israel probably subjected to hatred and persecution of other nations, in which we find these memorable words: "I will declare thy name to my brothers, I will praise thee among the meeting [3] ". What brothers are here? These are of course other people and the proof is that we read a few verses later: "All the ends of the earth shall remember the Lord and be converted to Him all the families of the nations shall worship before thee. For the LORD is the kingdom and dominion over the nations. " And the same psalm ends with the promise that the apostolate of Israel which he has been referred will be successful: "We speak of the Lord to the next generation, when [4] it comes, she will announce her justice, she proclaims her work in people yet unborn. "

Let us finally observe that the brothers as given by Israel to foreign nations is sanctioned by the Mosaic legislation, as shown by this passage from Leviticus: "If your brother becomes poor and his hand bow near you, you will support thou shalt do that which is foreign to and remains in the country that he may live with thee [5] "

It was objected that the brotherhood of all peoples is artificial and is not accurate to compare human society to the family business, since reports of authority and obedience, which in the latter are essential, lacking completely this, the fundamental social unit of the supreme being absolute equality between all nations. We do not believe however that the necessary subordination to the family to do completely lacking in society, it only takes another form and becomes the observance of natural law, international law, without which all relationships between people is impossible. We do not deny that in addition to the family firm authority resides in the father under the natural dignity and not because of qualities that characterize other human personality. It is God that children in the worship of one God is their father and also father of all men, who in the society of nations, peoples command such respect for individual rights and rule the reports to exist between them, any attack against the sacred rights is a sin against the sky, as well as the recognition that nations do is implicit submission to the providential order.
